In his first trip to the Final Four, Kansas head coach Bill Self won the national championship in 2008. While at Kansas, Self has accumulated the highest winning percentage by a KU coach.
In 2007-08, Kansas won a school-record 37 games and that same year the Jayhawks were nominated for two ESPY Awards for best team and best game. The 2007-08 team was one of the best in school history. Under Self, KU has won a Kansas record nine straight Big 12 regular-season titles, six league tournament championships, has advanced to the NCAA Tournament Elite Eight five times (2004, 2007, 2008, 2011 and 2012), the NCAA Tournament Final Four twice (2008 and 2012) and won the school’s third NCAA and fifth national title.
A five-time conference Coach of the Year, including four times while at Kansas (2006, 2009, 2011 and 2012), Self has won league titles in thirteen of his last fifteen seasons and finished runner-up the other two years. Self has guided three teams to the NCAA Tournament Elite Eight – Tulsa, Illinois and Kansas.
Self has won numerous awards over the years including the 2013 John R. Wooden Award’s “Legends of Coaching” honor. He was the 2012 Naismith and Adolph Rupp national coach of the year and has been a six-time finalist for the Naismith honor (2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2009 and 2012). In 2008-09, Self was named national coach of the year by eight different organizations, including four listed in the NCAA record book - Associated Press, CBS/Chevrolet, Sporting News and USBWA. He received the 2008 Winged Foot Award for winning the national title. He was named the 2009 Big 12 Coach of the Year, and was also selected as the winner of national coach of the year honors by Yahoo! Sports, Athlon Sports, CBSSports.com and ESPN.com. Sporting News has named Self the National Coach of the Year in 2000, 2009 and 2012.
A native of Edmund, Oklahoma and a 1985 graduate of Oklahoma State, Self began his coaching career as a volunteer assistant at Kansas in 1985-86 under Larry Brown. That team advanced to the Final Four. He then returned to his alma mater as an assistant from 1987-93 working under head coaches Leonard Hamilton and Eddie Sutton.
Self’s first head coaching position was at Oral Roberts in 1994 where he was 55-54 in four years. He took over at Tulsa in 1998 with three winning seasons before taking over at Illinois from 2001-03. He was named the eighth head coach at Kansas on April 21, 2003.
