Braam Malherbe is an extreme adventurer, conservationist, television host and author of the best-selling book, The Great Run. Based in South Africa, Malherbe has an infectious energy that is fed by his life-long passion to protect the environment and has inspired countless others to do the same.
From early on in his school days, he dreamt up and completed extraordinary distance runs to raise awareness and funds for conservation. Staying true to his passion, he has been involved in counter poaching operations as an Honorary Ranger for SANParks, co-founded the Table Mountain National Park’s Volunteer Firefighting unit, and is actively involved in numerous NGOs, conservation groups and making it his life’s mission to fight poaching, environmental irresponsibility and the destruction of our precious natural resources.
In 2006 and again in 2008, against the world’s top medical experts’ advice due to serious knee problems, Malherbe and running partner David Grier achieved two world firsts by running the entire length of the Great Wall of China at a pace of a marathon a day for 98 days, as well as the entire coastline of South Africa. Both expeditions raised hundreds of thousands of dollars for Operation Smile, an international charity organization providing corrective surgery for children born with cleft lip and cleft palate disfigurements.
At age 54 Malherbe took part in the South Pole Ski Race Challenge, competing against other countries and helping to raise awareness on climate change and global warming. With his friend and teammate Peter van Kets, Malherbe finished in 3rd place, despite only learning to ski eight weeks prior to their departure.
Malherbe was voted the Men’s Health ‘2010 Unsung Hero’ and was recently named Woolworth’s ‘My Planet’ Ambassador in South Africa. He currently hosts a nature series titled ‘Get Connected with Braam’ in which he motivates audiences to become aware of and appreciate the connection we all have with animals and our natural world.
Having lost two brothers to substance abuse, Malherbe continues to challenge all of us to ‘DO ONE THING (DOT)’ and make a positive difference on the future of our planet and people.
