Ken Burns has been making films for more than thirty years. Since the Academy Award-nominated Brooklyn Bridge in 1981, Burns has gone on to direct and produce some of the most acclaimed historical documentaries ever made.
Burns’ films have won twelve Emmy Awards and two Oscar nominations, and in September of 2008, at the News & Documentary Emmy Awards, Burns was honored by the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences with a Lifetime Achievement Award.
Burns has been the recipient of more than twenty-five honorary degrees and has delivered many treasured commencement addresses. He is a sought after public speaker, appearing at colleges, civic organizations and business groups throughout the country.
A small sampling of Burns' award-winning films include: The Civil War, Prohibition, Baseball: The Tenth Inning, The National Parks: America’s Best Idea, Unforgivable Blackness: The Rise and Fall of Jack Johnson, Horatio’s Drive: America’s First Road Trip and The War.
His film, The Central Park Five, opened in theaters nationwide in December 2012 and aired on PBS in April 2013. Future projects include films on the Roosevelts, Jackie Robinson, the Vietnam War and the history of country music.
Burns was born in Brooklyn, New York, in 1953. He is a graduate of Hampshire College in Amherst, Massachusetts, and is co-founder of Florentine Films.
