Nancy Lopez is one of the greats in the history of women’s golf with a career that spans four decades and includes 48 LPGA Tour victories and three LPGA Major wins. Hailed as one of the most popular golfers in LPGA history, Nancy celebrated the 30th anniversary of her first LPGA Tour victory in 2008. In 1987, she won the Sarasota Classic—her 35th career LPGA Tour victory and also the site of her first LPGA career win in 1978—to qualify for the LPGA Tour Hall of Fame. She was inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame in November 1989.
Nancy’s accolades on the course and congenial personality have made her a natural selection for numerous awards and well-deserved recognition. In 1988, she was honored by GOLF Magazine as the “Golfer of the Decade” for 1978-87 during the Centennial of Golf in America celebration. In 1998, she was awarded the USGA’s Bob Jones Award for her distinguished sportsmanship in the game of golf. Considered one of the LPGA’s top-50 players and teachers (2000), Nancy was also the first female recipient of the Frances Ouimet Award for Lifelong Contributions to Golf in 2004. In 2005, she captained the victorious U.S. Solheim Cup Team to a 15 ½ -12 ½ home-soil win and has been selected to lead the 2009 PING U.S. Junior Solheim Cup Team.
Since retiring from full-time competition on the LPGA Tour, Nancy has remained very active in golf, including serving as the founder and principal of the Nancy Lopez Golf Company, which offers equipment and apparel designed specifically for women. She joins PGA/LPGA member Suzy Whaley and fitness expert Donna Richardson Joyner as spokespeople for the 2009 Women’s Golf Month.
