Born May 10, 1957 and raised in Washington, Phil was introduced to the sport of skiing through his father, Dave, who was the mountain manager of White Pass Ski Area in the northern Cascade Mountain Range. Early in his ski racing career, Phil was fortunate to have a training partner (twin brother Steve) to push him to the highest level of competition. Together, they became the two most successful U.S. ski racers of their era and were major competitors on the World Cup skiing circuit from 1976 through 1984. Phil retired from competition after winning a silver medal in the slalom at the 1980 Olympic Winter Games in Lake Placid, three Overall World Cup titles and a gold medal in the slalom event at the 1984 Winter Olympics in Sarajevo, Yugoslavia.
Currently, Phil’s winter months are spent mainly in the mountains. He teaches skiing for all levels of skiers, with his brother Steve, at the Mahre Training Center in Deer Valley, Utah. Although Phil no longer competes at the international level, he continues to compete in made for TV events, such as the Legends of Skiing in Vail, CO. These events feature former Olympic and World Cup greats. Last season, he began racing at the FIS level in the Western Region of the US, with aspirations of competing at the US National Championships at the tender age of fifty. Once a racer always a racer!
For several years Phil worked with the US Ski Team as a mentor to young and upcoming stars. While not competing or teaching, Phil does promotional work and product testing for the companies he represents.
Summer months are spent at home relaxing with family and friends or at the race track. Phil began driving race cars in 1987 with the same determination and enthusiasm he had for skiing, and it has become a new passion in his life. His aspirations are to become a top level road racer and win a Drivers Championship. Phil advises all people who have dreams to pursue them!
In September 2009, Phil was chosen to participate in Comcast's 'Local Heroes' campaign which benefits Olympians from the Washington area.
Phil enjoys spending time with his wife, Holly, and their children. They reside in Yakima, Washington.
