Sir Ranulph Fiennes is a British adventurer and holder of multiple endurance records. He was the first man to visit both the north and south poles by surface means and the first man to completely cross Antarctica on foot. The Guinness Book of World Records refers to him as 'The World's Greatest Living Explorer'.
Upon graduating from Eton, Fiennes joined the British army, following in the footsteps of his father who was killed in action in the Second World War. After eight years of service, Fiennes was honored with a Bravery Medal for his leadership skills during the Dhofar Rebellion.
Somewhat disillusioned by his British Army service, Fiennes discovered his passion for exploration in the 1960's. He led expeditions up the White Nile on a hovercraft in 1969 and in 1979, along with Oliver Shepard and Charles Burton, he travelled around the world on its polar axis using surface transport only, covering 52,000 miles and becoming the first people to have visited both poles by land.
In 1992 Fiennes led an expedition that discovered the lost city of Ubar in Oman. In 2000, he attempted to walk solo and unsupported to the North Pole. The expedition failed when his sleds fell through weak ice and Fiennes was forced to pull them out by hand. He sustained severe frostbite to all of the fingertips on his left hand which eventually led to their amputation.
Despite suffering from a heart attack and undergoing a double bypass operation four months before, Fiennes joined Dr. Mike Stroud in 2003 to carry out the extraordinary feat of completing seven marathons in seven days on seven continents in the Landrover 7X7X7 Challenge.
In March 2007 Fiennes undertook a personal challenge to climb the Eiger via it's much feared North Face, with sponsorship totaling £1.5 million to be paid to the Marie Curie Cancer Care program. He continues to compete in UK-based endurance events and to date has raised over £12 million for various UK charities.
Sir Ranulph is also an accomplished author, penning numerous fiction and non-fiction books, including his autobiography, appropriately titled Living Dangerously.
Fiennes has been the recipient of numerous awards throughout his career. In 1986 he was awarded the Polar Medal for outstanding service to British Polar Exploration and in 1993 he was appointed OBE for his 'human endeavor and charitable services'. Later in 2004 he was nominated for his second Polar Medal, this time for his trek to both poles. The Daily Telegraph has even named him as 'one of the world's top ten speakers'.
Sir Ranulph addresses audiences on a personal level, drawing the analogy between nature's most difficult challenges and the day-to-day struggles faced by individuals and businesses worldwide.
