Sergio Garcia, nicknamed ‘El Nino,’ entered the world of professional golf in April of 1999 and has already made quite an impact on the game.
Sergio’s father, Victor Garcia, is his teacher and the professional at their home course, Club de Golf de Mediterraneo. Sergio began playing golf at the age of three and went on to earn the title of ‘Club Champion’ by the age of 12 and at 14, he became the youngest player to make the cut in a European Tour.
Sergio was the first British Amateur Champion to finish low amateur in the 1999 Masters Tournament and in August of 1999, Sergio defeated Tiger Woods at the “Battle of Bighorn,” a made-for-television match emphasizing the battle of two young powerhouses of golf.
2001 marked Sergio’s breakthrough in America on the PGA Tour when he won at the MasterCard Colonial and one month later was victorious at the Buick Classic.
In 2005 Garcia secured two major wins, including the Booz Allen Classic as well as the Omega European Masters. 2006 was a success with Garcia being a key member of the Ryder Cup winning team. In 2007, Garcia made it to play-off stage in the Open Championship and continues to strive for a major Championship win. On May 11, 2008, García won The Players Championship on the PGA Tour in a playoff against Paul Goydos. In 2010 Garcia was a member of the winning European Ryder Cup team, beating the Americans 14.5-13.5.
